During my student teaching semester, I got a chance to teach the Matter Unit. I taught students about solids, liquids and gases and this Unit took about a month to teach. Before our final test day, we decided to take a day to think more about the difference between solids and liquids. The class started by listening to the Dr. Suess book, Bartholomew and the Oobleck. This book talks about a substance of Oobleck raining down on a town. While the kids watched the film, I started making the substance Oobleck in the back. All you have to do is combine cornstarch and water. I added some green to the mix so the students could relate it to the book. I put a little bit of the Oobleck into a cup for each student to experiment with. The goal for the students was for them to decide if the the Oobleck is a solid or a liquid. The cool thing about this Oobleck is it has proprieties of solids and liquids. The students had a chance to talk about the properties of matter. The kids had a fun time playing with the substance and they were able to have a debate whether it was a solid or liquid.
